Many diagnoses and risk assessments performed by others are based exclusively on clinical observation and
measurements of static levels of certain nutrients in serum. Static measurements, such as serum assays, can be
transitory, reflecting an individual's nutrient status over a narrow window of time. Using long-term markers on the
other hand provide more comprehensive information on nutrient status. Since lymphocytes carry an individual's
nutritional history for a period of months (the average life span of a lymphocyte is approximately four to six
months), use of this sample reflects an individual's nutrient status over a far longer period of time than static
nutrient measurements.
